Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has stated, ahead of his departure for the EU-Western Balkans summit, that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz should lead negotiations on behalf of the European Union with the aim of ending Russia's aggression in Ukraine.

Details: In Babiš's view, the continuation of the conflict will bring nothing positive, while it is equally clear that the aggressor is Russian ruler Vladimir Putin and that US President Donald Trump is focused on the Middle East and resolving the issue of the Strait of Hormuz blockade.

Quote: "In my opinion, it is German Chancellor Merz who should somehow lead a diplomatic mission on the basis of a mandate from the Council and the Commission."

Background:

  • EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas earlier stated that Europe would not be able to serve as a neutral mediator in potential negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, as it stands on Ukraine's side.
  • Kallas had previously emphasised that in discussions over a negotiator's candidacy, the EU must not fall into a Russian trap whereby Moscow would promote the most convenient candidate for itself.
  • Finland has indicated that determining Europe's role in the negotiation process regarding the Russia-Ukraine war and identifying a specific negotiator will be a lengthy process.
