Details: Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak announced the ban at a meeting with the Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.
Quote: "Today we introduced a ban on diesel fuel exports, and this will allow supplies to the domestic market to be increased."
More details: Novak added that Russia will start importing fuel from other countries this month.
The domestic fuel shortage in Russia has been caused by shutdowns at oil refineries and unscheduled repairs following Ukrainian drone strikes.
Background:
- Russia's plans to ban diesel exports were first reported in late June.
- In April, Russia banned petrol exports, a restriction that was due to last until July.
- In early July, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a decree permitting the circulation of Euro-3 standard petrol until the end of 2026.
- Several Russian regions are introducing fuel sales based on whether a vehicle's registration number begins with an odd or even digit, as authorities seek to ease long queues at petrol stations.
- Russia has also been negotiating with Kazakhstan to import around 50,000 metric tonnes of AI-92 petrol to ease domestic shortages caused by refinery shutdowns and unscheduled maintenance.
