Russian and Belarusian basketball players allowed back into FIBA competitions

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has lifted restrictions on representatives of Russia and Belarus. Players, coaches, referees, commissioners and other officials from the two countries can now participate in competitions held under the organisation's auspices.

Details: As a result, Russian and Belarusian basketball players are now eligible to compete in tournaments, including 3x3 basketball competitions.

However, the Russian and Belarusian national teams remain barred from international competitions. FIBA plans to consider their possible return separately at a meeting of its Central Board in December 2026.

"Russian and Belarusian individual players can participate and officials can be nominated in all FIBA competitions with immediate effect," it said.

Background: Russia and Belarus were suspended from competitions held under FIBA's auspices following the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
