Ukraine's Luch presents surface-to-air missile based on Stuhna anti-tank missile

Luch, a Ukrainian armaments design office, has presented the RK-2PZ surface-to-air missile, developed based on the Stuhna anti-tank guided missile (ATGM).

Details: The RK-2PZ surface-to-air missile is actively used on the battlefield. It is designed for use with the Desna surface-to-air missile system or, after modernisation, the Soviet-era Strela-10 system.

The missile retains the Stuhna ATGM's dimensions and guidance principle: a laser beam transmits commands to a receiver in the missile's rear section.

Once the target is visually detected, the operator locks it for automatic tracking and commands the launch. The system then guides the surface-to-air missile to the target.

The proximity sensor activates when the missile approaches the target. If the missile hits the target directly, the contact sensor activates, triggering the warhead.

The missile weighs 29 kg and carries a 6.1kg high-explosive fragmentation warhead. It is detonated by proximity using onboard sensors or upon direct impact with the target.

The manufacturer has not disclosed detailed specifications for the missile or its typical targets. However, the anti-tank version had a subsonic speed of 200-220 m/s. This makes the missile difficult to use against cruise missiles but suitable for engaging slower-moving drones.

The missile's design also points to its intended use against UAVs. The RK-2PZ has a series of laser proximity sensors around its nose that trigger the warhead when the missile approaches a target. This differs from conventional radio-fuze systems.

Suspilne Kherson, a local branch of the Ukrainian public broadcaster, previously reported on the use of the Ryf, a surface-to-air missile system based on the Soviet-era Strela-10, by the 30th Marine Corps.

The Ryf systems were equipped with surface-to-air missiles that visually resemble the RK-2 and intercepted aerial targets at a range of 4-5 km.
