Russia destroys quarter of Sumy Oblast's power generation capacity in single strike

Repeat Russian strikes on Sumy Oblast have destroyed a 36.6 MW power generation facility belonging to a member of the Association of Distributed and Flexible Generation.

Details: The facility was hit several days ago, and on Monday 14 September it was struck three more times.

Total generation capacity in Sumy Oblast is about 145 MW. The loss of this facility has wiped out roughly a quarter of that capacity.

"Distributed generation was developed in Ukraine in response to the vulnerability of large power units: smaller facilities are harder to hit, and the loss of one does not halt supply across an entire region. Sumy Oblast demonstrates the limits of this logic.

When a region's total capacity is relatively small, each individual facility becomes systemically important, and its loss is immediately felt in the balance," the Association of Distributed and Flexible Generation wrote.

The association also noted that in frontline areas, the construction of new generation capacity and the recovery of destroyed facilities are taking place simultaneously.

As a result, a significant share of the new megawatts being brought online by businesses is effectively being used not to increase overall capacity but to replace generation that has been lost.

Background: On 14 September, US President Donald Trump said that Ukraine and Russia had supposedly agreed not to strike energy facilities.
