Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) has released data regarding a new version of Russian Geran-4 jet-powered UAVs, which the Russians began deploying in the autumn of 2026.

Quote from DIU: "The upgraded Geran-4 features a new MOKh module based on a high-precision magnetic induction sensor (magnetometer), the PNI5GA manufactured by the US company PNI Sensor. The MOKh works in conjunction with the SADRA inertial navigation module, reducing gyroscope drift and improving the UAV's autonomous navigation accuracy."

Details: In addition to satellite and inertial navigation, the Russians have incorporated another autonomous navigation system called Susanin. This refers to an optoelectronic correlation system that compares real-time images from an optical sensor with a reference image stored in the computer's memory to maintain the UAV's designated route from launch to the target point.

The Russians also use an identical system on the new Geran-5 UAV (K5 modification).

Quote: "To strike bridge structures and overhead power line supports effectively by cutting them with a shaped-charge jet, the enemy has begun using a new KRSN warhead (a specialised shaped-charge cutting payload)."

Details: DIU noted that the Chinese Telefly turbojet engine has been replaced by a localised, Russian-manufactured equivalent produced in Alabuga. The remaining electronic units and components remain unchanged and identical to those on earlier Geran iterations, DIU added.

Background:

  • On 30 September, Serhii "Flash" Beskrestnov, adviser to the president of Ukraine and an expert in radio technology, stated that the Russians had used a special warhead designed to destroy high-voltage electricity pylons on a jet-powered strike drone for the first time that day.
  • Earlier, DIU released data on 20 pieces of foreign technological equipment used to produce various modifications of Geran attack drones at the Alabuga Special Economic Zone in Russia's Tatarstan.
