Quote: "It was riddled with shrapnel and damaged by the blast wave, but it stood firm. It did not fall. There is something deeply symbolic about that. Russia is once again trying to destroy our city, taking lives and leaving pain and ruins behind. But we remain. We help one another, clear up the debris, rebuild and support those who are having the hardest time right now."

Background:

  • Three soldiers were killed and another three were injured in a Russian drone attack on Ivano-Frankivsk on the evening of 11 October.
  • On 25 June, Kyiv began uncovering and cleaning historic monuments that had been protected by temporary structures since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. Protective structures were removed from the monuments to Princess Olha, Saint Andrew the Apostle and Saints Cyril and Methodius in St Michael's Square.
  • Kyiv City State Administration explained that Russia is increasingly using ballistic missiles and other weapons capable of destroying even reinforced concrete structures. Under these conditions, protective shelters made of modular structures and sandbags no longer provide adequate protection. In the event of a powerful blast wave, they can themselves cause additional mechanical damage to monuments.
