Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, commenting on overnight Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities, has said Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin has rejected the US-proposed "energy ceasefire".

Details: Sybiha noted that Putin responded to peace efforts by launching 39 missiles and more than 120 drones. Ukraine's energy facilities were the main targets of the attack.

Quote: "Putin is not simply attacking Ukraine. He is openly defying the United States and treating every attempt to stop this war with contempt.

There can be no economic rewards for aggression. No sanctions relief. No concessions that allow Russia to finance its next wave of terror. Every dollar that reaches Moscow's war budget is another resource for attacks on Ukrainian civilians and threats to transatlantic security."

Details: Sybiha called on Ukraine's partners to tighten sanctions, enforce them more rigorously and provide additional air defence support to Ukraine immediately.

"Putin must face consequences for rejecting peace, not incentives to continue the war," he concluded.

Background:

  • US President Donald Trump claimed that the "energy ceasefire" he had announced between Ukraine and Russia is in effect and said reports of violations needed to be checked.
  • On 11 October, Trump claimed on his social media platform Truth Social that Ukraine and Russia had agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire.
  • The Kremlin said it had nothing to say about the energy ceasefire announced by Trump.
