Details: Three of the diplomats expelled by Austria are accredited to the Russian Embassy in Vienna, while another is a member of the Russian delegation to the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
The ministry reported that the diplomats engaged in activities incompatible with their diplomatic status. They were therefore declared personae non gratae and ordered to leave the country.
These measures were based on intelligence gathered by security agencies, according to the ministry. No additional details regarding the reasons for the expulsion were provided.
Background: In September Hungary took the unprecedented decision to expel 10 members of staff of the Russian Embassy – for the first time since 2018. In response, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the country would expel employees of Hungarian diplomatic missions.
