On 7 March, the ruble depreciated against the dollar and euro to a record low.

In the evening, the dollar was worth 150 rubles, the euro traded at 164.5 rubles. During the day, the euro and the dollar strengthened against the ruble by 22-23%.
On 4 March, the Central Bank of Russia lowered the official exchange rates of the dollar and the euro to, respectively, 105.8124 and 116.5312 rubles. It was reported that they would be effective from 5 March.
The Central Bank suspended trading in all markets of the Moscow Stock Exchange until 9 March.
