Oleksii Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, believes that the IAEA's visit to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) captured by the Russians did not bring the desired results: the world still underestimates the nuclear terrorist threat coming from the Russian Federation.

Details: Journalists asked the Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council whether the visit of the International Atomic Energy Agency mission to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), which took place last week, had changed anything.

Quote: "No. It would be possible to talk about the improvement of the situation if the terrorists took away their weapons, explosives and left the power plant. Initially, the mission was supposed to go to Enerhodar [where the ZNPP is located] through Russia, but we protested. They eventually passed through Ukraine, but we agreed that the mission would be accompanied by independent journalists.

In the end, the press was not allowed there, and the IAEA did nothing; they should have insisted on keeping those agreements because the world needs to have information from independent sources. The world ignores the threat of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) seizure.

How much evil and misfortune must the Russians do for the world to finally see it? In 2008, Russia took part of the territory of Georgia, and everyone did not pay any attention to this. In 2014, they annexed Crimea, and the reaction was similar. A few months later, they killed 298 people on Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 [reference to the MH17 tragedy - ed.]. These are the consequences of conniving with terrorists. The scale of violence is increasing."

Background:

  • On 1 September, the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency arrived at the ZNPP in occupied Enerhodar. On 5 September, four of the six participants of the IAEA mission completed their mission at the station, while two representatives of the organisation were to remain there.
  • On 6 September, the IAEA released a report on its visit to Enerhodar and confirmed that Russia had stationed military personnel and equipment at the ZNPP.
  • Sergiy Kyslytsia, Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN, said that the Russians had tried to put pressure on IAEA Director General Raphael Grossi while he was preparing the report on the ZNPP.
