Occupiers damage 1,189 cultural sites in Ukraine, most of them in Donetsk and Kyiv oblasts

1,189 cultural sites have been damaged in Ukraine because of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Details: Currently, nearly a third of those cultural sites, specifically 446 sites, are completely destroyed.

The cultural infrastructure of Donetsk, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy and Kherson oblasts has suffered the most. 

As per the statistics of the Ministry, community art centres have been damaged the most by Russian combat actions. It is almost half (47%) of the total number of damaged facilities, specifically 563 buildings. 

In addition, the occupiers have destroyed 155 and damaged 298 libraries; destroyed 22 and damaged 41 museums and galleries; destroyed 38 and damaged 54 art educational institutions; and destroyed and damaged 18 theatres and philharmonics (nine sites of each type, respectively).

The Ministry has also pointed out that they are not able to obtain full data from Luhansk Oblast and significant parts of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk oblasts, as they are still under occupation. 

As per the information collected by the Ministry at the beginning of December 2022, the number of cultural infrastructure sites that had suffered from the Russian aggression in Ukraine amounted to 1,132 sites.
