Russia has improved tactics aimed at slowing down armoured counteroffensive operations of the Ukrainian Defence Forces in Ukraine's south, UK Defence Intelligence has reported.

Details: The ministry noted that Russia has been extensively using anti-tank mines as part of its tactics.

Moreover, the density of minefields in some areas indicates that the Russian occupying forces have used far more mines than Russian military doctrine stipulates.

Having slowed down the offensive of the Ukrainian Defence Forces, Russia attempted to strike Ukrainian armoured vehicles using drones, attack helicopters and artillery, the intelligence service added.

Quote: "Although Russia has achieved some success with this approach in the early stages of Ukraine’s counter-offensive, its forces continue to suffer from key weaknesses, especially overstretched units and a shortage of artillery munitions," the UK MoD stated.

Background:

  • Many Western media outlets have recently published articles citing anonymous officials, claiming that the Ukrainian counter-offensive "has begun slowly".
  • Western officials have publicly acknowledged that Ukrainian counteroffensive operations are indeed progressing more slowly than previously predicted, but have noted that this should not be surprising.
  • In an interview with The Washington Post last week, Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi said that soldiers are paying for the liberation of every metre of Ukrainian land with their blood, therefore he is irritated by outside comments regarding the slower-than-expected counteroffensive.
