Ukrainian is among the most popular languages on the Duolingo language learning platform. 37% of new students learn it to show solidarity and communicate with people.

The app's report states that among other languages, the proportion of students who voice such motivation is significantly lower: 17% and 18% for English and French, respectively. It is interesting that this reason is mainly given by younger students – representatives of Generation Z.

In 2023, most students who studied Ukrainian were residents of the United States, UK, Poland, Russia and Ukraine.

The most thorough approach to learning Ukrainian (based on the average time spent studying) was demonstrated by residents of Australia, Canada and Finland. Ukraine is in fifth place.

What are the most popular languages on Duolingo?

The most popular language of the app from year to year is English. It is being studied in 122 countries: Afghanistan, the Maldives and Malta were added to last year's list in 2023.

In 2023, Korean ranked 6th in the global language ranking, overtaking Italian. It belongs to the top ten languages studied in the largest countries of the world, in particular in India.

Also, this year, the Portuguese ousted Russia from the 10th place in the rating. The app is convinced that it indicates a decrease in interest in the Russian language due to Russia's war against Ukraine and an increase in global interest in Brazil and Portugal.

Last year, the countries with the highest percentage of students studying three or more languages were Finland and the United Kingdom. This year, students from Germany were ahead of their UK counterparts and took second place.

Note: The number of people who want to master Ukrainian in the language-learning app increased by 577%.
