Details: Financial Times stated that Milei's position on Russia's war against Ukraine distinguishes him from other regional leaders, such as Brazil's Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Mexico's Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who take a more neutral stance.

The Argentine president stated that he prioritised alliances with "countries that defend freedom", including the United States, Israel and Ukraine.

The outlet also stated that Argentina had already sent two Russian-made Mi-171E helicopters, which Milei promised to Zelenskyy, to Ukraine.

Background:

  • On 29 December 2023, Argentine President Javier Milei refused to join the BRICS organisation, which includes Russia, China, India, Brazil and South Africa.
  • On 10 December 2023, Zelenskyy took part in Milei's inauguration in Buenos Aires. After the inauguration, Zelenskyy, along with other representatives of foreign countries, took part in a ceremony to congratulate Milei on taking office.
