Ukrainian Illia Kovtun wins gold at Artistic Gymnastics World Cup

Ukrainian Illia Kovtun has won the parallel bars event at the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Illia scored the same number of points for performance as the Tokyo Olympic champion in this discipline, the Chinese gymnast Zou Jingyuan (14,900), but he received a higher score for execution.

The bronze medal went to Colombia’s Ángel Barajas, with 14,700 points. Another Ukrainian, Oleh Verniaiev, came in fifth with 14,566.
Background:
- Kovtun and Verniaiev secured two medals at the World Cup event in Cottbus, and at the previous event in Cairo.
- Illia also competed in the floor exercise, where he finished eighth (13,366 points). Ihor Radivilov was also unable to contend for medals, placing eighth in the rings competition (13,166).
