Petro Andriushchenko, adviser to the mayor of Mariupol, says there is a widespread cholera outbreak among children in temporarily Russian-occupied Mariupol.

Details: Andriushchenko reported that the Russian "authorities" are attempting to conceal this.

He says headteachers are keeping quiet about the outbreak and the city has not yet declared a state of emergency.

"Mariupol residents under occupation, you are your main line of defence. Please wash your hands. Boil water. Avoid eating unwashed food. Don't consume unknown liquids. Do not swim in the sea. Nobody will help you but you yourselves," Andriushchenko said.

He suggested that the rapidly warming weather might be the cause of the widespread outbreaks of the disease.

The mayor's adviser said messages have recently been circulating in Viber chats and groups on VKontakte (a Russian social network banned in Ukraine) claiming that Ukraine is planning "biological sabotage".

These posts specifically mentioned Ukraine "infecting" the water with cholera bacillus, warning that "there will be more deaths from this than from Covid-19".

Background: In January, Mariupol City Council reported an outbreak of viral infections in the occupied city.
