Power outages hit several oblasts after Russian attack, Chernihiv Oblast remains hardest affected

Russian forces have struck energy facilities in several oblasts over the past 24 hours, leaving consumers without power in parts of Ukraine as of the morning.

Details: Chernihiv Oblast remains the most severely affected.
Damage to equipment has forced Chernihivoblenergo, Chernihiv Oblast's distribution system operator, to implement rolling power outages across three queues simultaneously. [Ukrenergo defines a "queue" as a group of consumers and businesses using a specific amount of megawatts. The Dispatch Centre sets the number of queues needed across oblasts to address energy deficits. Critical infrastructure and industrial companies that import over 80% of their energy cannot be disconnected, according to a Ukrainian Cabinet resolution – ed.]
Emergency repair work continues in the oblast.
Drone strikes also damaged energy infrastructure in Odesa Oblast on the night of 8-9 October, leaving consumers without power. Power engineers are working to restore the supply as quickly as possible.
Ukrenergo adds that electricity consumption remains high. As of 9:30 on 9 October, demand matched the previous day.
Quote: "The reason is the persistent cloudy weather with rain across almost all of Ukraine. This reduces the efficiency of residential solar panels and leads to a corresponding rise in electricity consumption from the general grid."
More details: Given the weather conditions, Ukrenergo urges citizens to conserve energy and avoid running several high-power appliances simultaneously from 10:00 to 22:00.
Background:
- In recent weeks, Russian forces have shifted their tactics against Ukrainian energy infrastructure, focusing on large-scale strikes on energy facilities within specific oblasts rather than across the entire national grid.
- The city of Chornomorsk in Odesa Oblast was left in complete blackout following a Russian attack on 9 October.
