Details: UK intelligence analysts estimate that Russian casualties for 2025 have reached around 332,000. They also conclude that since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia may have had approximately 1,118,000 casualties in total.
The assessment states that Russia's average daily casualty rate in September 2025 stood at 950 personnel, described as "a moderate increase from Russia's August 2025 average daily casualty rate".
Analysts also noted that reported Russian casualty rates had declined each month from March to August 2025. However, in October 2025, losses have steadily risen, surpassing 1,000 per day between 5 and 12 October.
Quote: "Russia's decreased monthly casualty rate has been sustained at the same time as Russian forces have maintained a high operational tempo across the front line, and Russia has continued to make incremental territorial gains."
Background:
- In July 2025, the head of Estonia's military police stated that Russian losses in Ukraine already surpassed Soviet casualties during the Winter War with Finland.
- In early September, Gert Kaju, Head of the Defence Readiness Department of the Estonian Ministry of Defence, stated that Russian troop losses had decreased in recent months, as Moscow changed its tactics in its offensive against Ukraine.
