The Russians have stepped up production of aerial bombs fitted with new unified guidance kits that extend their range to about 200 km.

Details: Skibitskyi said Russian engineers have improved guidance kits for converting unguided bombs into precision-guided munitions (UMPK) that are fitted to standard bombs weighing 250, 500, 1,500 and 3,000 kg, giving them guidance and substantially increasing their reach.

He added that Russia developed aerial bombs with the new guidance kits during September and October and is now testing them in combat. Skibitskyi noted that the bombs reached distances of 193 km in one recent trial.

He stressed that the new munitions have greater resistance to electronic warfare systems and boast technical solutions that enable strikes at longer distances. Russian plants have begun mass production of such bombs, which are given names such as "Grom-1" and "Grom-2".

Background:

  • On 20 October, Ukraine's Air Force reported that Russian forces had for the first time launched at least two guided aerial bombs on Poltava Oblast from Kharkiv Oblast.
  • It was reported that munitions fell 20-30 km from the city of Poltava and that modified bombs such as UMPB-5R or Grom-E1/E2, which travelled about 120 km, were likely used.
