Ukraine's own resources may exceed planned defence spending

In the draft budget for next year, revenues from Ukraine's own resources are expected to exceed defence spending by UAH 21 billion (about US$500 million). These funds are to be allocated to Special Operations Centre Alpha of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) and the Foreign Intelligence Service.

Details: Roksolana Pidlasa, Head of the Budget Committee of the Verkhovna Rada, said: "This is a small amount as a proportion of all defence spending, but if it exists, it should also be directed to the defence of our state. In fact, this UAH 21 billion is proposed to be additionally allocated to the SSU's Alpha unit and the Foreign Intelligence Service."
The draft budget for 2026, adopted at first reading, allocates UAH 955 billion (US$22.7 billion) for the purchase and production of weapons, ammunition and drones.
This approach will make it possible to both boost Ukrainian production and purchase more weapons abroad, the press service says.
Background:
- Earlier, the Verkhovna Rada Budget Committee supported amendments to the 2025 state budget allocating an additional UAH 325 billion (US$7.8 billion) for defence.
- Ukraine's Finance Minister Serhii Marchenko has said the state budget will require US$45 billion in external financing to service debts next year.
