Starmer: This week has demonstrated unity of US and Europe against Putin
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said the key achievement this week has been the demonstration of the unity of the US and Europe in countering Russia and its invasion of Ukraine.

Details: Starmer referred to yesterday's EU summit and today's Coalition of the Willing meeting.
"We are all working with President Trump, and therefore we are all working as one wider coalition here in relation to the support we need to put in for Ukraine," he said.
The UK prime minister added that what has happened this week is "really significant".
Quote: "I think on the sanctions package and the bearing down on oil and gas, this week has been a really significant week. We went early with the measures that we, the UK, took, President Trump came in with really important measures that have had a real impact, and then of course the EU followed in with a further package of sanctions this week as well. And I think if I was to pick out one thing this week that was of most significance, it would be the combined impact of those packages."
Details: Starmer said this is not only because of the direct pressure that these sanctions put on the Russian economy, but also because they demonstrate how the EU, the US and the UK are all coordinating their efforts to support Ukraine.
Background:
- Starmer also announced that his country is accelerating a programme to produce over 5,000 missiles to strengthen Ukraine's air defence during the winter period.
- The United States has imposed sanctions on the Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil and their subsidiaries.
- The US is the world's most powerful sanctions authority, partly because it can target banks that work with blacklisted companies, denying them access to the dollar, which underpins the international financial system. Losing access to US currency would cause a crisis for any bank.
- Some Chinese state-owned oil giants suspended purchases of Russian seaborne oil after the US sanctioned Rosneft and Lukoil.
- White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt has explained that the US decision to sanction the Russian oil sector was due to Russia's lack of interest in peace.
