Belgian intelligence services reportedly believe Russia is behind recent drone incidents
Belgian intelligence services believe that a foreign state, most likely Russia, is behind a series of recent drone incidents which have disrupted air traffic and military operations.
Source: Belga, a Belgian national news agency, citing sources, as reported by European Pravda
Details: Belga's sources pointed to several signs of foreign involvement in the recent drone sightings: the drones fly in specific formations, under cover of darkness, and in proximity to critical Belgian facilities.
The Belgian intelligence services have concluded that such activity is "beyond the capabilities of hobbyists", Belga reported.
Concerns about possible Russian involvement have increased amid talks about using frozen Russian assets, most of which are held in the Brussels-based Euroclear depository, to support Ukraine.
Background:
- Air traffic at airports in Brussels and Liège was suspended on the evening of 4 November for safety reasons following reports of unidentified drones flying nearby.
- More suspicious drones were spotted over the Kleine-Brogel military base in the east of the country.
- An emergency meeting of Belgium's National Security Council was scheduled for Thursday 6 November in light of the drone incidents.
