Details: Prior to Okamura's decision, there was one Ukrainian flag flying on the Chamber of Deputies building. Now there are three, put up by MPs from the conservative ODS party, the liberal STAN movement and the Pirate Party.
"We at ODS have decided to immediately correct the first action by Tomio Okamura, the new speaker of the Chamber of Deputies. The Ukrainian flag has returned to the Chamber and now hangs from the windows of our parliamentary group," ODS representatives said.
"On his very first day in office, Mr Okamura showed that the only thing he is capable of is disrespecting such values as solidarity and courage in support of a country under Russian attack," STAN commented.
The Pirate Party said: "Nothing's changed for us. We're putting the flag that Tomio Okamura shamefully took down today back on the Chamber of Deputies building. Glory to Ukraine. Glory to the heroes."
Background:
- On 6 November, Tomio Okamura, the new Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, removed the Ukrainian flag from the building after being elected leader of the lower house the previous day.
- Okamura, leader of the right-wing populist SPD party, has long been critical of Ukrainian flags being displayed on public buildings as a symbol of solidarity with the country since Russia's full-scale invasion.
