Senator Graham: Congress should also have the right to review peace deal in Ukraine

US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham believes that the US Congress should also have the right to review any peace agreement regarding Ukraine.

Quote from Graham: "The proposed Russia-Ukraine peace deal provides an opportunity to end the war honorably and justly.
Congress should also have the ability to review a plan that includes any future security guarantees — just like we have the ability to review any Iran nuclear agreement."
Details: Graham said a lasting peace in Ukraine must ensure that Russia cannot launch a new invasion in the future.
He believes that congressional review of the agreement will help achieve this goal.
Another Republican, Senator Mitch McConnell (Kentucky), believes that pressuring the victim and appeasing the aggressor will not bring peace.
Quote from McConnell: "Which difficult concessions are we pressing Russia to make? How does limiting Ukraine's defences against future aggression increase the likelihood of enduring peace?
The price and stability of peace matters, and our credibility is on the line. Allies and adversaries are watching: Will America hold firm against aggression or will we reward it?"
Background:
- Following reports from the Ukrainian delegation at negotiations in Geneva, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the US proposals might incorporate a number of elements reflecting Ukrainian perspectives that are vital to its national interests.
- Rustem Umierov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine (NSDC) and a member of Ukraine's delegation at the negotiations in Geneva, said that the current draft of the "peace plan" already reflects most of Ukraine's key priorities.
- The United Kingdom, Germany and France have prepared counter-proposals to the 28-point US "peace plan", including a cap of 800,000 personnel for Ukraine's Armed Forces and negotiations to start from the current line of contact. The full text has been released by Reuters.
- Following the peace talks in Geneva, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that significant progress had been achieved on Sunday, while noting that he had heard nothing about the proposals made by European representatives, although a meeting did take place with national security advisers from European countries.
