Details: Anatolii, 17, and Artem, 8, sustained severe injuries as they were on their way to a chess lesson one morning.
Their mother Olena recalled: "I heard my older son scream. I looked over, and he was lying on the ground, his legs were injured. The car was on fire where Artem was sitting. I shouted, 'Artem, get out!' And he said, 'Mum, I can't stand on my feet.'"
Despite being in shock, Olena managed to pull both children from the burning vehicle and call an ambulance.
The brothers were taken to hospital in a critical condition – both had parts of their lower limbs torn off and open blast injuries. It wasn't until they got to the hospital that doctors discovered that Olena was wounded too. She was also hospitalised.
Anatolii had to have the front section of his right foot amputated and suffered a severe injury with damage to the heel bone of his left foot.
Artem's injuries were more severe – he underwent amputation at the level of the knee joint and suffered damage to bones and soft tissues.
The boys' lives were saved by a team of microsurgeons and rehabilitation specialists. They now face a long process of prosthesis and recovery.
