Russian leader Vladimir Putin, ahead of a meeting with an American delegation, again claimed that he has no intention of waging war against Europe, while also stating that Russia is "ready" for war if Europe "wants to fight".

Details: Putin's remarks were made before the meeting with the US delegation, which includes US President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff.

"We are not going to fight with Europe, I have said this a hundred times already," the Kremlin ruler stated.

At the same time, he said that Russia is "ready" for such a conflict if Europe "wants to fight".

"But if Europe suddenly wants to fight and starts, we'll be ready at a moment's notice," Putin added.

Background:

  • In late November, the Kremlin leader claimed that Russia is prepared to state in writing that it does not intend to attack Europe.
  • On 1 December, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with Witkoff and Rustem Umierov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council and the head of the Ukrainian delegation.
  • The call took place ahead of Witkoff's meeting with Putin, scheduled for 2 December.
