Elon Musk calls for abolition of EU after X is fined by European Commission

US billionaire Elon Musk has called for the European Union to be "abolished" after the European Commission fined his social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

• On 5 December, the European Commission fined X €120 million for breaching its transparency obligations under the Digital Services Act (DSA).
• The breaches include the deceptive design of its "blue checkmark", the lack of transparency of its advertising repository, and the failure to provide access to public data for researchers.
• The decision drew strong criticism from senior US officials, who likened the European Commission's actions to "censorship".
• This is not the first time Musk and the EU have clashed publicly. The billionaire has previously criticised the process by which the European Commission president is elected, claiming it is "undemocratic".
