Details: Röwekamp stressed that Germany's armed forces (the Bundeswehr) are capable of making the necessary contribution.

"The Bundeswehr can get the job done. It has demonstrated this in other missions," he said.

Quote from Röwekamp: "The joint commitment to security guarantees for Ukraine once the war is over is also in Europe's own interest, because it will enable us to defend against any renewed military escalation by Russia on our continent. It is therefore also in Germany's interest, which should contribute personnel and equipment to the international force in order to secure peace."

More details: According to a proposal put forward by several European leaders and government representatives as well as EU leaders, multinational forces would help ensure the security of Ukrainian airspace and maritime security, including through operations conducted on Ukrainian soil.

Background:

  • At a meeting of European leaders in Berlin on Monday 15 December, a proposal was made to form protection forces to help secure a potential ceasefire in Ukraine.
  • A joint statement said that Europe-led forces, with US support, would support the Armed Forces of Ukraine and ensure the security of airspace and maritime areas.
  • German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the Western peacekeepers envisaged under security guarantees from Europe and the United States could, under certain circumstances, repel Russian forces.
