- Following talks between Ukraine and the US in Berlin on 14-15 December, Zelenskyy said that the US planned to speak with Moscow, after which another US-Ukraine meeting should take place, likely next weekend.
- Axios reported earlier that the next round of US-Ukraine talks could take place this weekend in the US, possibly in Miami.
- On 17 December, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin claimed that Russia would prefer a diplomatic settlement of the war, but warned that if Ukraine and its partners refuse to engage in what he called "substantive dialogue", Moscow is prepared to continue seizing territory militarily.
- Zelenskyy said he hopes the United States is listening to Russia's latest signals about its intention to continue fighting the war and will respond accordingly.
