Ukrainian MPs have not yet presented proposals to amend election legislation for voting under martial law and there is still no consensus on holding elections online.

Quote: "As far as I know, there are no [draft proposals] yet, but I have passed all the signals to them. Are we looking only at presidential elections or elections to the Rada [Ukrainian parliament] and local elections? The United States asked about presidential elections. I told them I would be ready for such elections. We haven't discussed elections to the Rada and local elections.

How do you feel about the possibility of voting through Diia [Ukraine's revolutionary e-governance platform] or other electronic methods for Ukrainians abroad? I have always supported and raised the issue since the start of Covid [pandemic] about legislative changes so people could vote online. So far we haven't found a consensus with parliamentarians."

Background:

  • On 10 December, Zelenskyy discussed with representatives of the Verkhovna Rada the possibility of holding presidential elections in wartime Ukraine and is now waiting for MPs to "present their perspective".
  • US President Donald Trump believes that Ukraine should hold a presidential election, as a long time has passed since the previous vote.
  • The Ukrainian leader commented on Trump's remark that it is time for Ukraine to hold presidential elections and has said he was "ready for ever".
  • He also said that international partners should ensure security during the vote.
  • Zelenskyy is prepared to support amendments to the law on elections during martial law and is waiting for proposals from parliament.
