Quote: "We are prepared to consider ensuring security during elections in Ukraine, at least by refraining from carrying out strikes deep inside the territory on polling day."
Details: Putin made the remarks as he was commenting on the difficulties Ukraine would encounter in holding wartime elections. He also said he believes that Ukrainians who are currently in Russia should be able to vote.
"There are between 5 and 10 million citizens of Ukraine living in Russia who have the right to vote, and if elections are held, then we have the right to demand that they be given the opportunity to vote in the territory of the Russian Federation," he said.
Background:
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed the possibility of holding presidential elections in wartime Ukraine with representatives of the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) on 10 December and is now waiting for MPs to "present their perspective".
- US President Donald Trump believes that "it's time" for Ukraine to hold presidential elections.
- Zelenskyy responded that he is "always ready".
- He also said that Ukraine's international partners would need to ensure security during the elections. Zelenskyy himself is willing to make changes to the legislation on elections during martial law.
