The document was signed in Strasbourg by Greece's permanent representative to the Council of Europe, Nicolas Sigalas."
Details: Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset stressed that the International Claims Commission embodies justice and hope for tens of thousands of people who suffered from Russian aggression.
Quote: "It is our firm conviction that those who have suffered will not be forgotten. I urge the swiftest possible ratification so that we can begin the work of the commission for the people of Ukraine without delay."
Background:
- It has been reported that a record number of states signed the reparations convention on the first day.
- It was reported earlier that the Netherlands believes the need for Russia to face just punishment does not depend on peace agreements.
- Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys noted in his speech in The Hague that there were no reparations for the occupation of the Baltic states by the Soviet Union and that this led to further aggression.
