Details: Sybiha stressed that Ukraine demands the return of its civilian hostages – these 50 people, as well as thousands of other civilians who have been forcibly deported to Russia, including Ukrainian children.
Quote: "We urge all states and international organisations to join us in demanding the release of innocent civilian people stolen from their homes.
This particular war crime is already being prosecuted in Ukraine and should receive an appropriate response at the international level as well."
More details: Sybiha underlined that the war crime in Hrabovske highlights the constant threat to life that comes with a neighbour like Russia, and this is precisely why Ukraine needs a genuine, lasting peace.
Background:
- On the night of 19-20 December, in the Krasnopillia district in Sumy Oblast, Russian forces entered the border village of Hrabovske, which is located directly on the state border.
- Ukraine's Armed Forces have confirmed that Russian forces crossed the state border near the village of Hrabovske on the border with Russia and took more than 50 civilians away from there.
