Zaporizhstal plant says production halted after complete power outage

Zaporizhstal (Zaporizhzhia Steel Works) suffered a complete power outage on 23 December as a result of large-scale Russian strikes on energy infrastructure facilities, leading to an emergency shutdown of production.

Details: The company said it promptly switched to alternative power sources and then carried out a safe shutdown of production processes.

The company said that this helped avert a man-made accident and reduce the level of atmospheric emissions.

"There is no threat to the life or health of employees or city residents. Production will be resumed once the external power supply is restored," the company said.

Background:

  • On the morning of 23 December, a large-scale air-raid warning was issued across Ukraine. Russian forces launched a combined attack using cruise missiles and strike drones. Air defence activity was reported in the city of Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast, as well as in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast.
  • Russia has once again targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure, resulting in emergency power outages in a number of regions.
  • Energy facilities in western regions of Ukraine were the most heavily affected as a result of the Russian attack on 23 December.
