NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has said that US President Donald Trump is the only one who can force Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to stop Russia's war against Ukraine.

Details: Rutte said Trump is "fully focused on ending this war".
"He (Trump – ed.) wants to end Russia's war against Ukraine. He is the only one who was able to get Putin to sit down at the negotiating table, and the only one who will ultimately be able to force him to make peace," Rutte said.
At the same time, he said that making peace requires compromises and that "it's always the case in peace treaties".
However, Rutte did not specify who exactly should make such concessions.
He does not share concerns that the US under Trump might stop supporting Ukraine, which has been defending itself against Russian armed aggression for the fourth year already.
In addition, Rutte expressed confidence that under Trump the US would remain committed to NATO so that Europeans would not have to face Russia alone in the event of a Russian attack.
Background:
- On Sunday, Trump will meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at his Mar-a-Lago residence.
- Ahead of the meeting with the Ukrainian president, Trump spoke with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.
- Earlier, Zelenskyy mentioned five thematic areas discussed in the negotiations on the "peace plan" that he wants to raise at the meeting with the US president.
