The incident took place on 20 December 2025.

Soldiers from one of the mechanised brigades were ordered to take up positions that had been abandoned without authorisation by another unit, but the enemy was already waiting there."

Background:

  • A video appeared online showing Russian forces allegedly seizing a command observation post belonging to a Ukrainian unit in the centre of Huliaipole. Ukrainska Pravda sources said the incident had occurred on 18 December.
  • In a comment to Ukrainska Pravda, Vladyslav Voloshyn, spokesperson for the Defence Forces of Ukraine's South, said the reported facts were being checked and an investigation would be conducted.
  • A source speaking to Ukrainian public broadcaster hromadske confirmed that Russian forces had shown a real command post that belonged to the 1st Battalion of the 106th Brigade, previously the 75th Battalion within the 102nd Brigade. According to the serviceman, over 10 soldiers were present at the headquarters. When Russian troops approached, Ukrainian forces engaged them in a firefight. He added that the 1st Battalion of the 106th Brigade had exposed the flank of the 2nd Battalion of the 102nd Brigade after withdrawing from their positions, allowing the Russians to advance from the village of Marfopil and from the north-eastern side of Huliaipole.
  • Meanwhile, relatives of servicemen from the 1st Battalion of the 106th Brigade claimed that the unit had been surrounded in Huliaipole for over a month. After eventually breaking out, they were transferred to the 225th Assault Regiment and ordered to return to the city.
  • Dmytro "Perun" Filatov, commander of the 1st Assault Regiment, said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces command post in Huliaipole had been abandoned without a fight due to panic among personnel and negligent actions by commanders, despite the fact that only a small group of three Russian soldiers had infiltrated the city.
