"That's a big issue, certainly... It's unresolved, but it's getting a lot closer. That's a very tough issue, but one that I think we'll get resolved," he said.

Asked by a journalist to comment on the Russians' position that Ukraine must give up the entire territory of Donbas, Trump said: "That's what they've been asking for... They're going to have to iron that out. But I think it's moving in the right direction."

Trump later also said he believes the issue of the Ukrainian territories seized by Russia will be resolved "over the next few months".

For his part, Zelenskyy also described the Donbas issue as "very difficult".

"You know our position. We have to respect our law and our people, we respect the territory which we control… We have different positions on it [from] the Russians," he said.

"When we speak about a referendum, it's one of the keys... There is a possibility of Parliament to vote, according to the law, or to have a referendum," Zelenskyy added.
