Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said US President Donald Trump has promised to help Ukraine with air defence systems after being briefed on the situation in Ukraine.
Source: Zelenskyy during an online press conference on 30 December, as reported by European Pravda
Details: Zelenskyy said that he and Trump discussed strengthening Ukraine's air defences during their meeting.
Quote: "A separate second block that we had with President Trump was that I really need air defence. I really need NASAMS missiles. I really need PAC-3 missiles for Patriots. And I don't want to say publicly what our situation is right now, but I showed and demonstrated it to the American side."
More details: Zelenskyy said that "President Trump said he would help me".
Quote: "I am grateful to him for that. I handed over the relevant papers with the quantities we need and how [we need it]. I also said we are ready to buy all of this through the PURL [Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List] programme. And here I want to thank the Europeans for funding this programme. We have an opportunity to buy air defence. I asked the president only, if possible, to help us. The faster the better."
More details: Zelenskyy added that such support is needed despite diplomatic efforts to end the war because Russia has not stopped its strikes.
Background:
- Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on remarks by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk suggesting the United States could deploy troops to Ukraine as part of security guarantees after a peace deal is reached.
- He also said that a visit to Ukraine by US President Donald Trump would be useful, especially if the White House leader were to fly directly to Ukraine.
