EU plans to approve 20th anti-Russian sanctions package by anniversary of invasion in February
The EU has planned to approve the 20th package of sanctions against Russia by 24 February 2026, the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Details: The new package is set to include travel restrictions and EU asset freezes for individuals and organisations, with particular focus on those deemed responsible for the deportation of children and their ideological reeducation.
Diplomatic sources said that additional measures are also expected in the energy industry and banking sector.
The EU is also looking to close loopholes used to circumvent existing sanctions.
Brussels is considering a ban on imports of Russian uranium which would, in effect, sanction Rosatom, Russia's state nuclear energy corporation. A number of EU states have long pushed for this, but there has so far been resistance from certain countries including France and Belgium.
According to diplomatic sources, those countries could buy the uranium needed to run their nuclear power plants from South Africa, Australia or Canada, but at higher prices.
The most recent EU sanctions package was adopted on 23 October 2025.
Background:
- It was reported earlier that the European Commission planned to present proposals for the European Union's 20th package of sanctions against Russia after New Year celebrations.
- The European Union also decided to impose sanctions on shadow fleet vessels transporting Russian oil separately from broader sanctions packages.
