Survey reveals Ukrainians’ expectations for when war will end

A survey has found that 29% of Ukrainians expect the war in Ukraine to end in 2027, while one in three respondents – 33% – answered "don't know" when asked about the timing of the war's end.
Source: a survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) between 26 November and 29 December 2025
Details: The survey shows that only 10% of Ukrainians expect the war to end before the start of 2026 (down from 18% in September), while just 16% believe it could end at least by the first half of 2026 (15% in September).

Overall, only around a quarter of Ukrainians expect the war to end in the relatively near future.
Another 12% believe the war could end in the second half of 2026.

Nevertheless, the majority of Ukrainians – 62% – continue to say they are ready to endure the war for as long as necessary. Another 3% said they would be prepared to endure it for about a year.
Shorter timeframes – six months or a few months – were mentioned by 14% of respondents (down from 21% in September), while the share of those unable to answer the question increased from 13% to 21%.
For reference: The KIIS survey was conducted between 26 November and 29 December 2025 using telephone interviews based on a random sample of mobile phone numbers across all regions of Ukraine under government control. A total of 1,001 respondents aged 18 and over were interviewed.
Residents of territories temporarily not controlled by the Ukrainian authorities were not included in the sample (although some respondents were internally displaced persons from occupied territories). Ukrainians who had left the country after 24 February 2022 were also not surveyed.
Under normal circumstances, the statistical margin of error for such a sample (with a 0.95 probability and a design effect of 1.3) does not exceed 4.1% for indicators close to 50%, 3.5% for those close to 25%, 2.5% for those close to 10%, and 1.8% for those close to 5%.
In wartime conditions, in addition to the stated formal margin of error, a certain degree of systematic deviation is also present. The factors that may affect the quality of the results under wartime conditions have been previously outlined by the KIIS.
