Zelenskyy appoints acting head of Security Service of Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Yevhen Khmara, Head of the Alpha Special Operations Centre of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), as acting head of the agency.

Quote: "Yevhen Leonidovych Khmara, Head of the Alpha Special Operations Centre of the Security Service of Ukraine, shall temporarily perform the duties of the head of the Security Service of Ukraine."

Background: Zelenskyy spoke earlier about a meeting with Vasyl Maliuk, during which they discussed candidates to succeed him as the head of the SSU.

The Ukrainian leader said Maliuk will continue working within the SSU structure on Ukrainian asymmetric operations against the Russians.

Zelenskyy had a separate meeting with Khmara to discuss opportunities for the SSU's systemic development and the special operations being prepared.

For reference: Khmara is an experienced special forces officer who has served in the SSU's Alpha Special Operations Centre since 2011. He was appointed head of the Alpha Special Operations Centre in 2023.

Khmara was awarded the Order of Danylo Halytskyi and, for personal courage and heroism shown in the fight against crime, the Order for Courage, third class.
