Details: It was reported earlier that the Coalition of the Willing met in Paris on 6 January.
Quote: "We stand ready to commit to a system of politically and legally binding guarantees that will be activated once a ceasefire enters into force."
More details: Costa said that the European Union will join efforts to provide the security guarantees which Ukraine needs to conclude any long-term peace agreement.
He added that the EU will continue to support Ukraine's progress towards EU membership.
The EU will also help cover Ukraine's financial needs over the next two years through a €90 billion loan agreed by the European Council in December last year.
Costa said that some of the funds will support Ukraine's armed forces, which he described as the first line of defence against aggression.
He said that the EU "will assist with our civilian and military EU missions on the ground."
Quote: "Ukraine must be in the strongest possible position – before, during, and after any ceasefire."
Background:
- It was reported earlier that the Coalition of the Willing has prepared a draft declaration calling for the United States to commit to supporting the coalition's European forces if Ukraine comes under attack.
- A special coordination centre in the US-Ukraine-Coalition of the Willing format will be established on the basis of the operational headquarters of the Coalition of the Willing in Paris. The coordination centre will be responsible for security guarantees for Ukraine from Western allies.
