Russian attack leaves Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts almost completely without power – Ukraine's Energy Ministry
Russian forces attacked critical infrastructure in Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts on 7 January, where emergency power cuts are currently in place.
Source: Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne; DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy company; Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council; Ministry of Energy; Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia Oblast Military Administration; Oleksii Kuleba, Minister for Development of Communities and Territories
Details: Suspilne reported that electricity had disappeared in many districts of the city of Dnipro and in some areas water supply had also been disrupted.
Lukashuk said there are currently no forecasts for the restoration of power supply in the oblast and advised residents to store water.
Quote from Lukashuk: "This particularly concerns the Pavlohrad and Synelnykove districts, as Dnipro-Zakhidnyi Donbas [the state interdistrict water supply and sewerage business] has also been left without power."
Details: DTEK later reported that emergency power cuts had been introduced in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast due to the Russian attack.
Updated: The Ministry of Energy said that Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts had been almost completely left without electricity due to the Russian attack.
Critical infrastructure is operating on backup power.
Fedorov reported that mobile communications are operating in emergency mode due to the large-scale power outage in the oblast.
Quote from Fedorov: "All base stations are being switched to battery power, which will last for approximately up to eight hours. Meanwhile, operators, together with local authorities, are deploying generators to maintain communications further.
I ask residents of Zaporizhzhia Oblast to limit the use of mobile communications unless absolutely necessary and, where possible, to use national roaming, GPON and internet messengers."
Details: Kuleba added that restoration work in Dnipro and some other settlements in the oblast is continuing with consideration for the security situation in order to restore heating and water supply to residents as quickly as possible.
The activation of generators continues in Zaporizhzhia, along with the connection of cogeneration units. Water supply is being maintained using alternative power sources.
He also said that all trains in the affected regions had switched to reserve diesel traction, while signalling and communications systems are operating on backup power. Train services are continuing without interruption.
Background:
- Russian forces launched a large-scale attack on the city of Kryvyi Rih on 7 January. Early reports showed that three people had been injured in the attack. The city might face serious emergency power outages.
- Earlier, Ukraine's Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko reported that further unscheduled power outages are possible as snow builds up on power lines and causes adverse road conditions.
