US Senator Lindsey Graham has said that US President Donald Trump has given the green light to a bipartisan sanctions bill targeting Russia.

Quote: "After a very productive meeting today with President Trump on a variety of issues, he greenlit the bipartisan Russia sanctions bill that I have been working on for months with Senator Blumenthal and many others."
Details: Graham said the decision was timely, arguing that "Ukraine is making concessions for peace and Putin is all talk, continuing to kill the innocent".
He noted that the bill would allow Trump to punish countries that buy cheap Russian oil, which he said is fuelling Putin's war machine.
Quote: "This bill would give President Trump tremendous leverage against countries like China, India and Brazil to incentivise them to stop buying the cheap Russian oil that provides the financing for Putin's bloodbath against Ukraine.
I look forward to a strong bipartisan vote, hopefully as early as next week."
Background:
- On 7 January, US European Command reported that the US had detained the Russian-flagged tanker Bella 1 (Marinera) after pursuing it from Venezuela. The vessel was detained for violating US sanctions.
- Earlier, Trump said that only his actions had pushed other NATO allies to spend more on defence, that Russia would have seized Ukraine long ago without his role and that it is only because of the US and his leadership that Russia and China take NATO seriously.
