Emergency electricity outages have been introduced in the city of Kyiv as a result of a large-scale Russian attack and grid overload.

Quote from Kovalenko: "Due to a combination of weather conditions and the aftermath of the overnight attack, the energy system is unstable and unable to cope with the load. Currently, more than 417,000 customers are without power. The most difficult situation is on the left bank."

Background:

  • As a result of Russia's attack on Kyiv, four people were killed, and the city is experiencing disruptions to its electricity and water supply.
  • The Ministry of Energy reported that as of the morning of 9 January, more than 500,000 consumers in the city of Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast were left without power following the Russian attack.
  • Half of Kyiv's apartment buildings – almost 6,000 – are currently without heating due to damage done to the capital's critical infrastructure by the Russian large-scale attack.
