Slovakia's leaders declare refusal to provide military support to Ukraine

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, Prime Minister Robert Fico and Speaker of the National Council Richard Raši confirmed after a joint lunch on Saturday 10 January that they share a unified position on not providing military support to Ukraine.

Details: At the meeting on Saturday 10 January, Pellegrini, Fico and Raši discussed key issues relating to Slovakia's interests at home and abroad.

According to Pellegrini, the meeting confirmed that the three highest constitutional officials could together discuss all issues in a very open, constructive and pragmatic manner.

He said the politicians agreed that Slovakia should have a representative in the talks of the Coalition of the Willing on Ukraine, while Slovakia's position remains unchanged: the country will not continue to provide military support to Ukraine, will not send any soldiers, and will not take part in EU loan guarantees amounting to €90 billion.

• Recently, Robert Fico criticised the meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Paris but said he could envisage Slovakia taking part in monitoring a peace agreement if one is reached.
• Members of the Coalition of the Willing, Ukraine and the United States have signed a joint declaration on security guarantees for a stable and lasting peace in Ukraine.
• The Coalition of the Willing has also decided to establish a special coordination centre in Paris in the format US–Ukraine–Coalition of the Willing, which will be responsible for providing security guarantees to Ukraine from Western allies.
