The city of Kyiv is experiencing a large number of localised power failures due to a recent Russian attack as well as freezing cold weather and grid overloads, leading to prolonged power cuts.

Quote: "Due to the attack, freezing weather and grid overloads, we are seeing a large number of localised faults that lead to prolonged power outages.

Details: DTEK said 57 repair crews are working round the clock to restore electricity to Kyiv residents.

DTEK asked Kyiv residents to be understanding.

It said in a statement: "Support energy workers and the energy system: when power returns, switch on appliances one by one to prevent further outages occurring due to grid overload."

Background:

  • As of 11 January, more than 1,000 residential buildings in Kyiv remain without heating.
  • Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko has said the electricity supply situation in Kyiv should improve by Thursday 15 January.
