Quote: "Khartiia has established control over the building of Kupiansk City Council. The Khartiia search-and-destroy unit and the Kupiansk tactical group are completing mop-up operations in the city, which was deblocked during a successful operation led by the command of the 2nd NGU Corps."

Details: The Corps posted GoPro footage recorded by fighters from Khartia's 4th Battalion who stormed the Kupiansk City Council building.

Soldiers from a reconnaissance and strike group of the battalion raised the Ukrainian flag over the city council in central Kupiansk.

"The Kupiansk operation proves that thanks to planning, the competence of commanders and headquarters as well as high-quality preparation of units – everything that we call the Khartiia method – it is possible to successfully stop and crush the enemy," said Colonel Ihor Obolienskyi, Commander of the 2nd Corps.

Background:

  • On 12 December, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the Kupiansk front, where he recorded a video beside the city's half-destroyed entrance sign and congratulated Ukraine's Ground Forces on their special day.
  • On 12 December, it became known that Ukraine's defence forces had carried out a successful counterattack near Kupiansk and encircled a Russian grouping in the city.
  • Since October, the Russians have repeatedly claimed to have occupied Kupiansk. However, Ukrainian troops are continuing to hold the city.
  • On 2 December, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin loudly "invited" foreign journalists, including Ukrainian ones, to visit Pokrovsk and Kupiansk to show Russia's supposed control over these cities.
  • On 30 December, Ukraine's Ground Forces released photos of Kupiansk, which was destroyed by the Russians who attempted to capture it.
