Details: "We are introducing additional payments for energy workers who work in repair and recovery crews at energy companies. This concerns specialised personnel who arrive directly at the sites of strikes and restore the supply of heat, electricity, water and gas," Svyrydenko wrote.

"I instructed the Ministry of Energy together with the Ministry of Finance to submit the relevant decision to the Cabinet for consideration," she said.

Svyrydenko emphasised that energy workers are operating in extremely difficult conditions under fire, during freezing temperatures, day and night, and that thanks to their work the life of the state continues even after Russia's large-scale attacks, with light and heat returning to homes of Ukrainian people.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also announced the introduction of additional payments in his evening address.

"We agreed with the Prime Minister to develop a special programme to support precisely these people – those who work directly in repair crews, 24/7 in the most difficult conditions. The government will propose ways to significantly increase the pay of these personnel for each month of winter," Zelenskyy said.

Background:

  • It was previously reported that Kyiv is gradually moving from emergency electricity restrictions to predictable hourly outage schedules after Russian strikes on energy facilities.

  • A key energy facility was damaged in the Novhorod-Siverskyi district in Chernihiv Oblast as a result of a Russian attack. As a result, a number of settlements have been left without power.

  • Russian forces attacked energy infrastructure facilities once again in Odesa Oblast on 12 January. Significant damage to equipment has been recorded as a result of the attack. About 33,500 households in the oblast remain without electricity.
